South Island School Roots & Shoots
Our Roots & Shoots group WAN BO! has been busy building and looking after a new garden in our school as well as collaborating with other ESF schools to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing our energy consumption by 10%. Our next big project is to improve recycling facilities at the school and start a clothes-recycling programme that link with an orphanage in Asia.
Shekou International School Roots & Shoots
The Shekou International School Group has been involved in several projects including starting a recyclable bag initiative at our school- we designed a school cloth bag and sold over 400 bags to the community with the message of Reuse, Recycle, Reduce, Refuse on the bags. Students led assemblies to inform the community about the importance of not using plastic bags. We met with a local school to discuss environmental issues and agreed to meet throughout this year to work on projects. We watched Inconvenient Truth together in Chinese. Every classroom was provided with posters about tips for recycling- every classroom has recycling bins.
Hong Kong International School by Vincci Cheng
We focused on stopping car idling in the high school and middle school roundabout areas that is very common after school when drivers wait to pick up students from school. HKIS Roots and Shoots researched the negative effects of car idling, and prepares educational flyers to pass out to idling drivers on the days that we surveyed and patrolled the area. We picked out a few days to examine car idling in the area and create awareness for this issue, handing out brochures and holding up signs. This proved effective. After the first 2 days, the car idling reduced to almost zero. Another part of our project was creating face masks that warned of air pollution in Hong Kong and passing it out to people in the school to create awareness within the community of air pollution
Our group was successful in taking the first few steps to pollution-awareness. Our anti-car idling campaign was an overall success.
