English Environment Program

A ROOTS & SHOOTS HONG KONG PROGRAM - FREE RESOURCE FOR TEACHERS

Introduction

Roots & Shoots is a program by Dr. Jane Goodall. It is a global network of likeminded students and teachers working to empower young people to make a difference. Youth groups choose projects in the area of animals, environment and human community and take ACTION!

The process of action is one that relies on compassion, which only comes with understanding. It is based on this model that “English Environment” is being introduced into Hong Kong schools. The free program combines environmental and social education lessons taught through an English medium.

The goal of the program is to provide ESL students with an opportunity to practice their English skills while building their knowledge on environmental and social issues in Hong Kong.

We hope that this will begin to lead to compassion that will eventually inspire action – action to make our world a better place!

The Program

Aimed at primary school students the 10-lesson program is made up of easy to follow lesson plans that cover the areas of air pollution, recycling & waste, animal appreciation & social studies. The program can be run as part of normal English lessons or as an extra curricular activity. The lessons can be taught with minimal resources and can be conducted by both local and native speaking English teachers. As the program aims to build students English skills there is an emphasis on vocabulary development and writing skills. Once completed the students will have a better understanding of local environmental and social issues and will be ready to form their own Roots & Shoots group!
